KRZYSZTOF ZANUSSI, ‘POSITIF’, 1981

‘Camouflage’ met with a very impulsive and direct reception. It provoked vehement emotions which to some degree overshadowed the subtlety of its message. Only now, when the emotions have subsided, the message of the film is being discovered and expounded.

RAFAŁ MARSZAŁEK, STAGNANT WATERS [KAMIEŃ W WODĘ], WARSZAWA 1980

‘Camouflage’ is not a morality play. The sum of small conformities, assuming the shape of a mathematical graph indicating a pretty big conformity remains here without an alternative. The types of behaviour represented by Old Cynic and Young Holy Willie reflect in fact their tactics rather than their attitudes. Docent infringes the values which he secretly continues to profess but whose dusting would not be worth his while; Master would like to be at once ‘noble and sly, valiant and cautious’(…). The content of inexorability in this brilliant film has no match in Zanussi’s creative output to date.
