When raising the issue of a national style at a working meeting, Aleksander Ford warned against transferring the experience of the Italian neo-realism to our films. The ‘suspicions’ of Italian influence on ‘Hours of Hope’ have found confirmation. Nevertheless, the national character of the film has not been lost.

ADAM PAWLIKOWSKI, HOURS OF HOPE [GODZINY NADZIEI], ‘PRZEGLĄD KULTURALNY’, 1955, NO. 21

Although set in wartime, this is not a film about war. The value of ‘Hours of Hope’ is in that the dozens of its characters have not been changed into a crowd. The truth of reality is accompanied by the truth of psychological observation. Threads of the plot are linked by its point and not by an ideological statement. Quick situational clashes, glances, rushes of joy or fear raise the temperature of the story (…) The success of ‘Hours of Hope’ is also due to the fact that each element of film language has retained here its unique character and equal status.
