I stand up for prisoners because it is my duty as a film director to stand up for the weak, for those who have lost (… rest of article censored)

Saniewski has made a woman sentenced to life in prison the central figure of his film (…) The prison film usually has two faces. It shows either a criticism of the penitentiary system or tells the story of a prisoner struggling to prove his or her innocence. Saniewski has the courage to follow neither of the well-tried recipes. (…) Here is a situation of existential dimensions: a prisoner gives birth to a child. The most interesting and moving theme is that of maternity. (…) The main role, on which the whole film depends, was entrusted to Ewa Błaszczyk. From the moment we learn that she expects a baby (…) we accept each of her deliberately inconsistent moves. This is a new significant and socially committed Polish film that emphasizes the need for respect for every human being.
