WOJCIECH SMARZOWSKI, THE WEDDING [WESELE], ‘FILM & TV KAMERA’, 2003, NO. 3
Blending of comical and tragic elements is the characteristic feature of all my work so far (…). ‘The Wedding’ represents a form of my opinion about the things around me. There is something I disagree with and that’s why I made this film. The title is obliging, but I don’t want to talk about any references.
MAŁGORZATA SADOWSKA, UNSAVOURY HOTCHPOTCH [ZEPSUTY BIGOS], ‘PRZEKRÓJ’, 17 X 2004
Smarzowski’s film unmasks not only the family but also the hypocrisy of our social life (…). ‘The Wedding Party’ is not a piece of journalism but a dynamic, intense and densely-knit film – made with passion, not to say – with fury. Hence the decidedly one-sided picture of the world, hence the exaggerations and balancing on the edge of grotesque (…). The film is sure to arouse controversy. Yet, it is enough to open a newspaper or switch on the news to realise that we are indeed stuck in this unsavoury hotchpotch up to the ears.
