[DIALOGUE FROM THE FILM]
Maria: Be careful. This may end up badly. What do you want from Zygfryd? And those books… He keeps reading all night like mad. You need him… But what for? That is… Drawicz:… certainly not what you’re thinking. Maria: How do you know what I’m thinking? Drawicz: I just know. Maria: You’re a bad man. Drawicz: Maybe.
ANNA TATARKIEWICZ, PLAY OF YOUTH AND DEATH [GRA MŁODOŚCI I ŚMIERCI], ‘POLITYKA’, 1987, NO. 8
This film is a guarded yet piercing complaint, a cry of youth that feels lonely in the world of adults – immature, incompatible, irresponsible. Domalik based his film on a story by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, which he modified and gave more depth. Two attitudes to the young generation are confronted here: instrumental and protective. (…) Ethics, not aesthetics, is therefore seen as the determinant of culture. True culture means readiness to see a human being, a brother or sister, in another person (especially when they are weak) and to lend them a helping hand. (…) Hopefully, Andrzej Domalik will be as successful in the future as several outstanding debutants in Polish cinema.
